3 Reasons Your Ductless Mini-Split is Leaking Water
A ductless AC can be a convenient way to cool your home, but if it starts leaking water, you’ll need to take steps to fix the problem. Here are three reasons why your ductless mini-split is leaking water.
Clogged Condensate Drain Lines
A condensate drain line is responsible for carrying away water that has condensed on your evaporator coils. Eventually, these lines can become clogged with dirt, algae and other debris. When this happens, water will begin to back up and leak out of your mini-split AC unit.
If you notice your AC unit leaking water, it’s important to have a professional check the condensate drain line. They will be able to clear any blockages and ensure that the line is not damaged. In most cases, a simple cleaning will solve the problem. However, if the damage is more severe, the entire line may need replacement.
Dirty Air Filters
Air filters help to remove dirt, dust and other airborne contaminants from the air, preventing them from clogging up the system and causing it to overwork itself. However, if air filters become dirty, they can actually cause the unit to leak water. This is because the dirt and dust buildup prevents the filters from doing their job properly, causing the unit to work harder and eventually leading to a buildup of condensation.
Improper Installation
If the unit is not installed level, the condensate will drain to one side and overflow. Another installation issue that can cause leaking is when the drain line is not pitched properly.
The pitch should be at least a quarter-inch per foot, with the lowest point of the drain line being closest to the air conditioner. If the drain line is not pitched correctly, the water will back up into the unit and cause it to leak.
